Coffee preparation methods

There are a series of methods for preparing coffee, each with its own nuances and particularities.

Coffee is a much loved and consumed drink, it is the most popular drink around the world, with an estimated consumption of approximately 2 billion cups per day, and this is largely due to the variety of coffee preparation methods.

Even though it is the same drink, the fact that it can be prepared in countless ways allows each consumer to choose the one they consider most tasty and suitable for each moment, which further democratizes that delicious coffee, whether in the morning, in the afternoon or in any time of day.

Each method has its own impact on the texture, flavor and body of the coffee. The choice of method often depends on personal taste, available time and the ingredients and equipment available. Experimenting with different methods can be a delicious adventure for coffee lovers. Let’s take a look at some of the most commonly used methods:

ESPRESSO

It is the base for several popular drinks, such as cappuccinos, lattes, macchiatos, and Americanos. It is the foundation of many coffee creations in coffee shops and for many enthusiasts at home.

It's a way to enjoy a concentrated and intense dose of coffee, capturing the distinct flavors of coffee beans in a small volume of drink. Espresso is one of the most concentrated and intense forms of coffee.

Preparation:

Grinding: The coffee is finely ground, similar to the texture of refined sugar. The correct granularity is essential for a good espresso.

Compaction: The coffee powder is placed in a special filter holder and compacted evenly with controlled pressure.

Extraction: Hot water, usually at a temperature between 90°C and 95°C, is forced under high pressure (usually 9 bar) through the compacted coffee. The extraction time is short, around 25 to 30 seconds.

Characteristics:

Concentrated Flavor: Due to the rapid extraction, espresso has a greater concentration of coffee flavors and oils.

Crema: The crema layer is formed by the emulsification of natural coffee oils, resulting in a foam on the surface of the espresso.

Body and Texture: Generally, a well-made espresso has a full body and a velvety texture.

AEROPRESS

is a device

Cool coffee brewing that is loved by many coffee enthusiasts. It's portable, easy to use, and creates a great cup of coffee. Place coffee grounds in the chamber, pour hot water, stir and press the plunger through a filter to extract the coffee. It's quite versatile — you can adjust the brewing time, grind size, and other variables to experiment and find your perfect cup. People love it for its convenience, simplicity, and the ability to brew a delicious cup of coffee in a short period of time.

CLEVER

is a method of preparing coffee that combines elements of infusion by immersion and filtration. Here's an overview:

How it works:

Preparation: Add coarsely ground coffee to the filter inside the Clever device, which resembles a regular coffee filter in a cup.

Infusion: Pour hot water over the coffee and let it steep for a set period of time, usually around 3 to 4 minutes. During this time, the coffee is immersed in water, releasing its flavors.

Release: After the infusion time, place Clever in a cup or pitcher. It has a valve at the base that, when placed over the cup, releases filtered coffee similar to a drip method.

Characteristics:

Time Control: Clever offers control over steeping time, allowing you to adjust the intensity of the coffee flavor.

Ease of Use: It is relatively simple to use, combining the simplicity of an infusion method with more controlled filtration.

Versatility: Can be adjusted to different flavor preferences by controlling coffee grind, brewing time, and water and coffee proportions.

Benefits:

Rich Flavor: The steeping method tends to extract a full range of flavors from the coffee, resulting in a rich, complex drink.

Easy Cleaning: Cleaning is simple, as the filter is disposable and does not require complex washing.

Clever is a great option for those who like to have control over the coffee infusion process, enjoying a fuller-bodied cup full of flavor nuances.

CHEMEX

is a coffee preparation method that combines drip infusion with a special thick paper filter. The Chemex is loved for its simplicity, attractive design and the ability to produce clean, smooth tasting coffee, perfect for those looking for a balanced and refined cup of coffee.

Operation:

Special Filter: Uses a thick and resistant paper filter, in the shape of a cone, placed on an hourglass-shaped support (or wooden "strainer saver").

Coffee Grind: Grind the coffee a little coarser than the texture typically used for drip methods, between the granularity of sand and salt.

Preparation: Place the filter in the holder and rinse it with hot water to eliminate the paper taste and heat the container.

Adding Coffee: Add ground coffee to the moistened filter, leveling the surface to ensure even extraction.

Drip Infusion: Pour hot water over the coffee in a circular motion, allowing the coffee to absorb the water and steep slowly.

Extraction: As water passes through the coffee and filter, it is collected in the base of the Chemex as clean, smooth, pure-tasting coffee.

Characteristics:

Clean Taste: Thick filter paper removes oils and sediment, resulting in clean, smooth, less oily tasting coffee.

SIPHON

The equipment usually consists of two glass chambers (upper and lower) connected by a U-shaped tube.

Heating: Water is heated in the lower chamber while the upper chamber contains the ground coffee.

Vacuum Formation: When the water is heated, the steam presses the water into the upper chamber, where it mixes with the coffee.

Infusion and Extraction: The water-coffee mixture is gently stirred for a complete infusion. Then, the heat source is removed and the vacuum created draws the coffee back to the lower chamber through a filter.

The resulting coffee is clean, aromatic and often has a lighter texture and a distinctly rich flavor. Due to the vacuum extraction method, many enjoy siphon coffee for its unique sensory quality and distinct aromas.

V60

It is a drip coffee preparation method that uses a V-shaped cone, hence the name "V60". This method, created by the Japanese company Hario, is quite popular among coffee enthusiasts for its simplicity and ability to control various elements of the preparation.

Characteristics:

Total Control: You can control the water temperature, flow rate and infusion time, directly influencing the flavor of the coffee.

Clear, Clean Taste: The fine filter paper traps oils and sediment, resulting in a cup of coffee with a clean taste and less bitterness.

The V60 is a popular choice for those looking for coffee with specific flavors and a clearer, lighter cup, with the advantage of being able to adjust many details of the brewing process.

THE FRENCH PRESS

Also known as a plunger coffee maker, it is a classic coffee brewing method that emphasizes soaking and extracting the coffee's natural flavors.

Characteristics:

Full-Bodied Flavor: The immersion method results in a full-bodied coffee, with natural oils and sediments present in the cup.

Simplicity: It is an easy-to-use method, not requiring paper filters or complex equipment.

The French press is appreciated by those looking for a full-bodied coffee, rich in natural flavors and with a simple and direct preparation. It's a great option for those who like to experiment with different flavor profiles and don't mind a small amount of sediment at the bottom of the cup.
